Planning to visit Florence in just one day? It may sound ambitious, but the good news is: Florence is compact, walkable, and incredibly rich — which means you can experience a lot, even in a short time.

As a local guide, I always say: it’s not about seeing everything, but about experiencing the city in the right way.

Here’s how to make the most of your day in Florence.

---

Start Early: Piazza del Duomo

Begin your day in Piazza del Duomo, before the crowds fully arrive.

This is the heart of Florence, where you’ll find the Cathedral, Brunelleschi’s Dome, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery.

Take a moment to really look at the details — this is not just a quick photo stop, it’s where your connection with the city begins.

👉 If you’d like to understand the history, symbols, and hidden details of this area, this is one of the best places to explore with a local guide.

A Coffee Like a Local

Before continuing, stop for a quick Italian breakfast.

Order a cappuccino and a cornetto and enjoy it standing at the bar — simple, quick, and very Italian.

The Medieval Streets: The Hidden Florence

Between Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria, Florence reveals one of its most fascinating layers.

The narrow medieval streets that connect these two areas are often overlooked, but they are essential to understand the city.

This is the original medieval structure of Florence — a dense network of alleys, towers, and hidden corners that once formed a fortified town.

Walking here means leaving the open squares and entering a more intimate and authentic side of the city.

Small shops, stone buildings, and unexpected details make this walk feel like part of the experience, not just a connection between two points.

Walk into History: Piazza della Signoria

From the Duomo, walk towards Piazza della Signoria, one of the most important squares in Florence.

Here you’re surrounded by history:

Palazzo Vecchio, Michelangelo’s David (replica), and the Loggia dei Lanzi.

This is not just a beautiful square — it is the political heart of Florence, where power and public life shaped the city for centuries.

Standing here, you are literally in an open-air museum where every sculpture and building has a meaning.

👉 This is usually one of the highlights of my walking tours, because it’s where Florence really comes to life through its stories.

Lunch: Keep It Simple and Authentic

By lunchtime, move away from the main squares.

Look for a small trattoria in a side street — that’s where you’ll find more authentic food and a better atmosphere.

Try something traditional like ribollita or pappa al pomodoro, or go for a bistecca alla Fiorentina if you’re hungry.

Afternoon: Art or Atmosphere?

In the afternoon, choose based on your energy and interests.

If you love art, the Uffizi Gallery is a must. But don’t try to see everything — focus on a few key masterpieces.

If you prefer a slower experience, just walk.

Follow the Arno River, cross Ponte Vecchio, and head into the Oltrarno area — one of the most authentic parts of Florence.

👉 This is the side of the city I personally love the most, and where I often take visitors who want to see a more local Florence.

Sunset: The View You Don’t Want to Miss

Make your way to Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset.

Yes, it’s a bit of a walk — but the view is worth every step.

This is usually the moment when Florence truly stays with you.

---

Evening: Slow Down

For dinner, avoid the busiest streets and take your time.

Afterwards, enjoy a quiet walk through the city center. Florence at night is softer, calmer, and incredibly atmospheric.

Final Thoughts

One day in Florence is not enough — but it is enough to fall in love with it.

If you focus less on rushing and more on experiencing, even a short visit can feel meaningful.
